We're offering two parallel tracks this year, one of which is an updated versions of material we taught last year. Since they run in parallel, you can choose only one of the following...

Note: the PHP track has been canceled for this year.

CSS, Javascript and AJAX

Instructors: Kedron Rhodes, Owner, onPO!NT Media Group and Joel Boonstra, Software Architect, Agathon Group

Learn AJAX techniques from the ground up. We'll start with an overview of CSS and the Document Object Model, essential foundations before diving into AJAX and Javascript. Building on those, we'll dive into AJAX, looking at when to use it, how toolkits make life easier and how you can use specific examples on your own site.

This class is targeted at designers who aren't afraid of a little programming, and programmers who dally in design. You should be able to read and write HTML and CSS by hand before taking this class. Familiarity with programming will help.

Systems Administration

Instructor: Peter Green, CTO, Agathon Group

This intensive Linux systems administration course will cover numerous aspects of installing, running, maintaining and tuning the Linux operating system and many popular add-on packages. Using CentOS 5, a derivative of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, attendees will be able to follow course materials on a live server for a truly interactive experience. (As such, attendees are strongly encouraged to bring a laptop!) Previous exposure to Linux and the command line is recommended, but not critical.

Topics will include:

  • Industrial-strength networking: firewalling and routing with iptables, Quality-of-Service (QoS), Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) in userspace and kernelspace
  • Getting the most out of LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL and PHP)
  • Advanced architecture (high availability, clustered load balancing, centralized authentication)
  • Extracting and interpreting system performance data
