Project Manager Job Description

Agathon is a digital product studio that builds websites, mobile apps, and digital tools for Christian ministries, non-profits, and academic institutions. We’ve been doing this since 1999, and we’ve built the company around long relationships, both with our clients, and with our team.

As a Project Manager at Agathon, you are the primary liaison for both our clients and staff. You are a critical part of cultivating and strengthening our client partnerships. As an internal product expert, you come alongside our clients to understand their vision and refine their requests. Internally, you collaborate closely with our staff to translate those needs into clear, actionable, and scheduled tasks, ensuring the digital products we build will help our clients do their good work in the world.

Competencies

  • Strategic Discernment: Ability to listen to what clients want, uncover their underlying needs, and confidently guide them toward wise, effective decisions.
  • Exceptional Communication: Excellent written and verbal skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for ministry leaders, and conversely, translate client vision into clear tasks for our developers.
  • Diligent Organization: A detail-oriented mindset, capable of shepherding the work within the framework of Agathon’s values, timelines, and practices.
  • Agility & Adaptability: Highly capable of context-switching effectively between different clients, projects, and priorities throughout the workday.
  • Ministry Empathy: A heart for our clients’ missions and an understanding of the unique operational realities of Christian ministries and non-profits organizations.
  • Technical Fluency: A solid, high-level understanding of the components of digital products and the web/mobile development lifecycle.
  • Risk Management: Ability to recognize potential risks early and respond appropriately to ensure all involved understand actions taken.

Ensure Agathon delivers on the client’s technical requirements and business needs.

  • Evaluate and Guide: Provide high-level, strategic guidance to clients regarding project requests, clearly explaining the impact on timeline, technical complexity, and ministry goals.
  • Bridge the Gap: Collaborate closely with small internal teams (2–6 developers and UX designers) to translate technical realities into clear, accessible communication for our clients.

Client Relationship & Partnership
Build, nurture, and grow our client relationships from vendors into true partners.

  • Facilitate Connection: Lead client meetings, and facilitate communication.
  • Manage Project Health: Monitor budget pace and hours, keeping clients proactively informed of their project’s financial status.
  • Advocate: Serve as the client’s internal champion within Agathon, ensuring their voice and mission are represented in Agathon scheduling and prioritization.
  • Communicate Consistently: Provide regular, transparent updates on project status, risks, and deliverables.
  • Guide Delivery: Coordinate and oversee User Acceptance Testing (UAT) with clients to ensure the final product meets their expectations.

Agathon Team Coordination
Equip the internal team to be able to do their work efficiently and collaboratively.

  • Define the Work: Ensure tasks are clearly scoped and defined so our developers and designers have exactly what they need to meet client expectations.
  • Plan the Cadence: Structure and plan work appropriately for each unique client, whether that means managing weekly sprints, targeted retainer hours, or hybrid methodologies.
  • Align the Team: Facilitate regular team synchronization calls and stand-ups to keep the project moving smoothly.
  • Balance Resources: Collaborate with fellow Agathon Project Managers to determine priorities, resolve scheduling demands across different projects, and ensure all team members have a clear understanding of their expectations.

Required Qualifications

  • Proven Experience: 3–5+ years of digital project management experience. Previous experience in an agency or dev shop environment is a bonus.
  • Agile Expertise: Solid understanding of Agile methodologies, including sprint planning, backlog grooming, and writing clear, actionable user stories for developers.
  • Tool Proficiency: Experience navigating modern project management and team collaboration tools (such as Jira, Confluence, GitHub, and Slack.)

The Details

  • Location: 100% Remote.
  • Schedule: This is a half-time, hourly position.
  • Core Hours: While we offer flexibility, you must be reliably available for client meetings, team stand-ups, and timely communication. We operate primarily in the Eastern timezone, but have staff and clients in other timezones. We can work together to find a good schedule.
